Short answer
Fragmentary Order is set across the Solar System in 2251. Humanity was once united under Core, a system run by a megacorporation, which is now fracturing from within. War is outsourced: contractors fight through RepEnts, remotely operated clones. The first known location is Blue Mars, a partly terraformed, post-apocalyptic Mars.

The setting in one paragraph
The official site calls Fragmentary Order a hardcore sci-fi combat simulator set in "a fully systemized future of remote warfare." You "send your controlled operator into high-risk combat zones across the Solar System, executing contracts, scavenging resources, and engaging in tactical encounters." The year is 2251. When the game was named in April 2026, the setup was a humanity "once united under a central system called Core" that has fallen into internal strife.

War as a business
The most distinctive idea in the setting is how it treats violence. The November 4 announcement puts it in three lines: death is a business expense, risk is an investment, combat is labor. War has been outsourced, and you are the contractor. Because you fight through a RepEnt, losing a fight costs you a body and its gear, not your career.
That framing shows up in the reveal too. A downed player is still on comms, asking his squad not to forget his gear. See the gameplay breakdown.

Blue Mars
Insider Gaming's June 2026 first look described the first location as a partly terraformed Mars with "some kind of post-apocalyptic vibe." Fan wikis add that it has been cut off from outside supply. The cor3.gg story points the same way: solving its first puzzle loops unlocks a "ship to Mars" ticket.
Factions
Official material hasn't named many sides yet. Fan wikis list two on Mars, not yet confirmed by the studio:
- Core Colonial Structure (CCS) — Core's colonial administration.
- Prime Colonial Forces (PCF) — a rebel force fighting it.
Names from the cor3.gg news feed
cor3.gg runs an in-world news feed with numbered stories. The headlines are a good taste of 2251, per the community archive: "Terra Mater: New Synthetic Steak", "USOL Housing Scandal", "Astrocrop Grows People", "Orbit-12", "Halcyon-42", "Our Star Is Dying", "RepEnt Do Not Sleep", "Sect of the Sun", "Where Does the Self End?", "Aliens on Mars" and "Fragments of Earth". Document names elsewhere in the ARG include Project Artemis, Project Demeter and the New Karfagen disaster.
How much of this ends up in the shooter itself is still open.
Same universe as Tarkov
On November 5, 2026, Nikita Buyanov confirmed Fragmentary Order shares a universe with Escape from Tarkov. How near-future Tarkov leads to the 2251 of Core hasn't been explained. More in Fragmentary Order vs Tarkov.
What "fragmentary order" means
The title is a military term. A fragmentary order, or FRAGO, is an abbreviated form of an operation order. It is issued after the main order to change or modify it, or to carry out a branch or sequel to it. In other words: a short update to the plan, sent mid-operation.
It suits a game about contractors taking orders from a corporation that is coming apart. The community already uses "FragO" or "Frago" as shorthand for the game.
Common questions
When is Fragmentary Order set?
In 2251, across the Solar System.
What are RepEnts?
Replicated Entities: clone bodies that players operate remotely. Losing one is a cost, not the end of your run.
What is Blue Mars?
The first confirmed location: a partly terraformed Mars with a post-apocalyptic feel, reportedly cut off from outside supply.
What does fragmentary order mean?
In military use, a fragmentary order (FRAGO) is a short order that changes or adds to an existing operation order. The game borrows the term for its title.
